Forgetful Frankie, The World’s Greatest Rock Skipper: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Jill Bobula and Katherine Bobula/Illustrator, Rob Hall; part of the “We Are Powerful” book series, Wildberry Productions)
Comments:2009; 32 full colour pages hand illustrated, softcover with spine, 9” x 9”. Reading level about grade 3-4; target audience: children K-7
Contents:This picture book tells the story, in a gentle and positive way, of a child diagnosed with FASD. The child demonstrates his understanding of his strengths, his challenges and of the accommodations that have been made at school and home to help him to be successful in his life. This book could be used to promote an understanding of FASD to both children affected and to children in general as well as to educators and parents. The book demonstrates how it looks when successful accommodations and structures have been put in place to support a child with FASD.
Note: Page 26 shows a reward system at home. Since all children are unique, it is possible that this works with this child. However, one of the primary disabilities of children diagnosed with FASD can be difficulty with executive functioning. This may result in a failure to see cause and effect and as a result, reward systems may not be a productive strategy.

End of Ignorance…Multiplying our Human Potential, The (John Mighton, 2007)
Comments: 2007; hardcover 5.5” x 8.5”; 320 pages; currently available in paperback
Contents: John Mighton is the founder of JUMP Math, a system of learning based on fostering emergent intelligence. In this book, he draws “on new research in brain development and calls for a re-examination of the assumptions which underlie current teaching. He pays attention to how kids pay attention, chronicles what captures their imaginations, and explains why their sense of self-confidence and ability to focus are as important to their academic success at school as the content of their lessons.” (Quote from the book’s cover page). “The End of Ignorance conceives of a world in which no child is left behind - a world based on the assumption that each child has the potential to be successful in every subject” (quote from Random House summary).
In the first seven chapters, Mighton presents his learning theory and provides examples of application of JUMP Math in classrooms. In the final three chapters, he critiques systemic challenges. Mighton includes appendices on research and more information on JUMP Math.

Student review of materials — A student currently in Math 8 reviewed Workbook 8 for POPFASD. These are her comments:
"Here is what I like about the textbook JumpMath.
-It has step by step instructions
-Work is done right in the book
-It has explanatory diagrams
-It gets you to work step by step
-The diagrams make working out problems easier
-The questions are easy to understand
-Each page covers a single topic, not several
-The pages are in sequence, instead of jumping all over."
“Jump Math in Action” is an article by Lavana Heel of the Vancouver School Board; published in “SEA Crosscurrents Magazine”, Fall 2007.
Contents: The JUMP Math program is both a philosophy and a set of materials and methods. It is primarily intended for use by teachers in the classroom. JUMP Math offers a complete package of materials covering the curricula for grades 1 to 8. It can also be used as a support in after-school tutoring by schools or community organizations, or by parents at home.
Each grade level has two workbooks and a Teacher’s Guide. There are three essential aspects to the JUMP Math approach:
- concepts and skills are isolated
- material is introduced in steps
- preparation and practice are provided
The Teacher’s Guide contains:
- an introduction to the JUMP philosophy and teaching method
- mental math skills
- activities and extension exercises
